Colorism is the practice of discrimination based on the color of one’s skin. It affects people socially and systematically; those who have darker skin tones face oppression, while those with lighter skin tones experience privilege. Colorism also extends to hair texture and facial features, prioritizing characteristics that are deemed closer to Eurocentric features, such as looser curl patterns and narrow noses.
We can see it play out in many ways, including the casting of light-skinned people over dark-skinned people; lightening skin in post-production; longer prison terms and lower incomes for those with darker skin; and more. It’s important that we educate one another on this topic so that we can work to end it.
